Lorem Ipsum Generator — Placeholder Text for Designs and Mockups

Before a design is ready to go live, the real content rarely exists yet. Copywriters are still writing, the client hasn't approved the product descriptions, and the blog hasn't launched. Designers and developers need something to fill the space so they can work on layout, typography, and spacing without being distracted by the actual words. Lorem ipsum is the standard solution — a block of meaningless but vaguely Latin-looking text that has been used as placeholder content since the 1960s.

A brief history

Lorem ipsum comes from a garbled excerpt of Cicero's "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical work from 45 BC. The text was scrambled into nonsense to make it clear that it's a placeholder, not real content. It gained its association with typesetting in the 1960s when Letraset started using it on their transfer sheets. Desktop publishing software like PageMaker adopted it in the 1980s, and it's been the default placeholder for designers ever since.

Web and app design mockups: When building a page in Figma, Adobe XD, or a similar tool, you need text in every content area. Lorem ipsum fills the space without implying that the specific words matter.

HTML/CSS development: When building a new layout, you need content to test how it handles different amounts of text, line wrapping, overflow, and scrolling. Generate a few paragraphs and paste them into your HTML.

Print design and layout: Brochures, magazines, and printed materials go through multiple layout rounds before the copy is finalised. Lorem ipsum lets the designer work on the typography and grid without waiting for real content.

Email template testing: Email templates need to look correct with varying amounts of content. Test with a short paragraph, a medium one, and a long one to see how the template handles different content volumes.

Database and form testing: If you're testing a form or a database interface and need to populate fields with realistic-looking content, lorem ipsum words fill the job without any risk of accidentally including sensitive data.

Frontend development in India: With the rapid growth of web development and startup product teams, designers and frontend developers frequently use lorem ipsum while building interfaces. Any page that isn't content-complete but needs to be reviewed by a client or stakeholder benefits from sensible placeholder text.

How to use it

Select whether you want paragraphs, sentences, words, or bytes. Enter the number you need. Click generate and the lorem ipsum text appears. Copy it with the "Copy" button. There's also an option to wrap the output in HTML <p> tags, which is useful when you're pasting directly into an HTML document and want each paragraph as a proper element.

When to use real content instead

Lorem ipsum is ideal for layouts and typography testing, but it has limits. If you're testing how a page looks with a real product name, a real headline, or real prices, placeholder text won't help — it's better to use representative actual content, even if it's not final. Similarly, if stakeholders are reviewing a mockup and will be confused by nonsense text, use something more realistic like "Product Name" and "Short description here" as placeholders instead.

For testing text that will be in Indian languages (Hindi, Tamil, Bengali), you'd need a different placeholder generator since lorem ipsum is Latin script only. For layout testing with Devanagari or other scripts, use actual sample sentences from those languages.

Tips

Start with the "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" classic opening if you want instant recognisability. Most designers and developers know the phrase and immediately understand it's placeholder text, which avoids confusion during reviews.

Generate slightly more text than you need rather than less. It's easier to trim placeholder text to fit a space than to generate more to fill a gap you didn't anticipate.

Limitations

Lorem ipsum only generates Latin script text. It provides no way to test layouts with languages that have different character widths or text directions. For right-to-left script testing (Arabic, Hebrew) or for testing Devanagari character widths, you need sample text in those scripts.

The text generated is meaningless by definition. It's fine for visual mockups but not appropriate for usability testing where you need participants to read and understand the content. For usability testing, use content that resembles what the actual page will say.
